Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in infants and young children. The type and severity of symptoms depend on multiple factors, including the particular strain of the virus and whether the patient has other underlying medical problems. Adenovirus infections most commonly cause illness of the respiratory system; however, depending on the infecting serotype, they may also cause other illnesses and presentations. It is a major cause of pneumonia and acute respiratory disease, mainly caused by serotypes 1,2,3,5,7, and 14.
