BIOCREDIT AFP

One Step Alpha-fetoprotein Antigen Test

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of about 70,000Da and a 3~4 % carbohydrate content. AFP is one of the most well-known carcinofetal biomarkers, i.e. substances present during embryonic and fetal life, practically not existing in adults but likely to occur in concomitance with neoplasms. AFP levels in adults, normally below 15ng/ml, are found to be higher in several tumoral and non-tumoral pathologies. 70~90% of patients with primary HCC exhibit high AFP levels, ranging up to a concentration of 400~500ng/ml. High AFP concentrations are also found in about 90% of patients suffering from germ cell testicular tumors. For this pathology, the AFP assay is considerably useful during patient follow-up. Other types of tumors produce a moderate AFP increase in the limited number of patients.
